Leek United Building Society is today calling on savers who may have lost touch with their accounts to get in touch. Ahead of Government plans to give money in untouched accounts to charity, the Society wants to reunite as many people as possible with their money. If you think you have an account with the Society but have made no withdrawals or deposits for over 15 years, your account may be considered ‘dormant’, particularly if you have moved house and haven’t told us your new address. Under the Government’s proposals, this dormant money will be given to charitable causes. Whilst you will be able to revive your account or claim your money back at any time – with interest- - we would like to reunite as many of our members as possible with their money, before the scheme goes ahead in 2009. By contacting the Society you can easily reactivate your account. All you need to do is visit a local branch of the Society with your passbook or card. If you have lost your passbook or card, then bring along proof of your identity. Alternatively, you can call us on 0800 093 0002 or drop us an email - to savings@leekunited.co.uk. Commenting on the call to action, Keith Brightmore, Head of Savings & Insurance at Leek United Building Society said; “We are really keen to track down all savers who may have ‘lost accounts’ with us. We estimate around 130 accounts with the Society have not been touched for over 15 years and may therefore be included in the Government’s unclaimed assets scheme, which is due to come in in 2009. “There is no need to worry, as no member will lose any money or membership rights due to the new unclaimed assets scheme, but we are really keen to get in touch with the owners of this money – all of whom are still members of the Society. If you think you have an account with us, that you haven’t touched for a long time do let us know – the sooner the better. Don’t forget, if you are moving house, let us know your new address.” |

A LEEK United savings product has been rated as one of the country’s best and most consistent for the returns made on it by investors during the last three years. The Society’s Mini Cash ISA has been placed among the national ‘Most Consistent Accounts’ after its performance was measured over 18 and 36 months periods by leading UK independent financial researcher Moneyfacts*. Performance of the ISAs (Individual Savings Accounts) was based on a maximum investment of £3,000. In the last 18 months, Leek United’s product gained total gross interest of £242.10, putting it in the top six. Over 36 months, the same Mini Cash ISA returned total gross interest of £483.33, placing it among the top five. Keith Brightmore, the Society’s Savings and Insurance Manager, said: “In today’s ever-changing marketplace, customers are looking for solid, consistent and reliable products, and that is precisely what these statistics show. “From a saver’s point of view, our Mini-Cash ISA has the added advantage of being a ‘no strings’, instant access product, whereas several of those rated just above us have conditions – such as a notice period for withdrawals – attached to them. “We are absolutely delighted that a Leek United product is continuing to prove itself so well, particularly in the face of strong competition from many of the larger financial institutions.” In a previous survey last year, the Society’s same Mini-Cash ISA was rated in the top 20 of 168 savings products assessed by Moneyfacts, following its yearly performance. Leek United has previously been ranked by Moneyfacts as the country’s number one Tessa (Tax-Exempt Special Savings Account) provider (2004), and has featured regularly in national newspapers’ ‘Best Buy’ sections for the quality of its financial products. As a mutual building society, Leek United has been looking after the financial interests of customers since 1862, and has branches in Staffordshire, Cheshire, Derbyshire and Shropshire. * Source: Moneyfacts.co.uk. Figures compiled on basis of interest earned on £3,000 by 1 October 2007. |
